Dungeons & Dragons miniature painting

Nolzurs Marvelous Miniatures – Female Aasimar Wizard – painted by me

I was recently invited to join a D&D campaign through a colleague at work. I really liked the idea of Aasimar characters (and the look of their miniatures) so I created Rhialla, a level 6 Druid, Circle of the Shepherd, to join their campaign.

Up to this point I hadn’t painted with many lighter colours (greys and whites) as I find they require many layers to achieve a good effect and sometimes just look like the grey default primer. In this case, the miniature pictured also looked quite fiddly which would add a layer of challenge and tedium.

Thankfully the figure itself wasn’t as difficult to paint as it appeared at first glance. With a few twist and turns, a small brush and a steady hand allowed me to reach all surfaces without much difficulty. The use of the light coloured paint had the added advantage of hiding any obvious stray brush strokes.

Originally I intended for a white upper cape and grey mid section. Unfortunately the white cape and grey looked too simple and the grey like unfinished, uncoated primer. In the end I added very runny black over the cape which filled in the crevasses, extenuating the shadows and details in the miniature. I tried for a similar effect on the grey area and added some metal highlights (using a permanent marker) to make it look more complete.

The wings took on the orange paint pretty well. I wanted to keep them transparent so I watered down the paint out quite a bit and applied it broadly. I then brushed off any excess with another dry brush before it set and stayed opaque. Unfortunately the same technique didn’t adhere quite as well when I tried it on the smoother surface of the spell effect near the base. I used light blue, dark blue or purple paint in that instance but perhaps I’ll try red or yellow and see how that works in future.

Overall I’m pretty content with the outcome and it didn’t take me as long as usual for such a complex miniature. Looking forward to writing the backstory and joining the campaign in a couple of weeks!
